What does 'night-time shutoff' or 'light sensor' mean?
Most cuckoo clocks (either mechanical or battery powered) come with 'night-time shutoff' in either a manual or 'light sensor' variety. This just means that both varieties enable you to control when the clock makes sounds.
Mechanical cuckoo clocks have a manual 'night-time shutoff' which are usually a lever with 2 positions - sound on or sound off.
Battery powered cuckoo clocks usually come with an automatic 'night-time shutoff' otherwise known as a light sensor which detects light levels and disables sound when the lights are off or it is very dark. While some include volume levels as well as sound on/off positions, some models also include an option to stop the sound between the hours of 9:00pm and 8:00am.

This unusual round cuckoo clock, designed by Barbero Design, has a sleek, almost industrial or automobile-esque feel. This is accentuated by it's silver and grey finish and complimented by an orange pendulum weight and orange clock hands. It's stark industrial feel is also given prominence by it's materials - a mixture of wood, aluminium and PVC.
This cuckoo clock's quartz movement is battery powered and the cuckoo strike, which chimes on the hour with the sound of a light babbling brook and sweet cuckoo call, can be volume controlled and is also switched off automatically during the night by a built-in light sensor controls.

Their craftsmanship ensures your cuckoo clock works as wonderfully as the world-famous traditional cuckoo clocks of the Black Forest region.
All Progetti cuckoo clocks are tested for a 24-hour period prior to their shipment to ensure the highest level of quality.

Meet the designer of the 'Auckland' cuckoo clock: Barbero Design
After studying industrial design at the 'Scuola Politecnica di Design' in Milan, Barbero began his professional training began with collaborations in Milan studios King / Miranda, Gregotti Associati, Massimo Morozzi Design, Von Klier Associates and Achille Castiglioni. During his professional career Barbero has designed household items and accessories for Tisettanta, Arflex Japan, Sedie & Company, Cristal Art, Giovannetti, Zeritalia, Lightec including many more. Barbero has worked with many leading car companies including Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes Benz and Mitsubishi. His studio is engaged with many business, government and university associations providing resources and teaching. He is highly commitment to the issue of teaching, as well as collaborations with the European Institute of Design in Milan and Turin and the University of Turin Dams, is a Faculty of Design professor in the Milan Politecnico. Worried about your order arriving on time? Nine out of ten of our orders arrive within the estimated delivery time or even earlier. However sometimes there can be factors (such as availability and delivery location) that can affect the delivery time and lengthen it by a few days or even a week or two for some more complex models. Many of our clocks are held in stock with our suppliers but, depending on the model/brand, some are built-to-order by one of our many manufacturers in Italy, Germany, Japan or Switzerland.
