Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What does 'night-time shutoff' or 'light sensor' mean?

Most cuckoo clocks (either mechanical or battery powered) come with 'night-time shutoff' in either a manual or 'light sensor' variety. This just means that both varieties enable you to control when the clock makes sounds.

Mechanical cuckoo clocks have a manual 'night-time shutoff' which are usually a lever with 2 positions - sound on or sound off.

Battery powered cuckoo clocks usually come with an automatic 'night-time shutoff' otherwise known as a light sensor which detects light levels and disables sound when the lights are off or it is very dark. While some include volume levels as well as sound on/off positions, some models also include an option to stop the sound between the hours of 9:00pm and 8:00am.

This uniquely-shaped cuckoo clock from renowned Japanese designers 'Lemnos', is an interesting take on the traditional shape of the modern 'chalet-shaped' cuckoo clock whereby its shape is formed from the negative space (or 'Dent'). This cuckoo clock features a minimalist 'cuckoo bird' who is unique to the 'Nendo' range of Lemnos cuckoo clocks (of which there are three different variants).

Cuckoo bird chime upon the hour

Each hour the little cuckoo bird peeps out from its door and 'sings' with a melody for the corresponding number of hours. The melody is unique to the 'Dent', 'Tilt', and 'Bookend' Lemnos cuckoo clocks and is the evolution of the unique cuckoo bird 'chime' sound. As the day progresses from the earlier hours towards 12 o'clock, the melody becomes longer until finally, at 12 o'clock, the full melody plays through to complete the cycle. See the video below to hear the unique sound that Lemnos have designed for their range of Nendo cuckoo clocks, of which there are three models - the 'Dent', 'Tilt' and 'Bookend' cuckoo clocks. This cuckoo clock also features an automatic night-time shut-off which works via a light sensor and shuts the sound off when the room is dark. It also comes with 'sound-off' controls so that the sound can be turned off altogether.

Worried about your order arriving on time? Nine out of ten of our orders arrive within the estimated delivery time or even earlier. However sometimes there can be factors (such as availability and delivery location) that can affect the delivery time and lengthen it by a few days or even a week or two for some more complex models. In such cases we will keep you informed of the delay and work with the the manufacturer and courier throughout the process to make it as simple as possible for you to rest assured knowing your clock is on track to you. Many of our clocks are held in stock with our suppliers but, depending on the model/brand, some are built-to-order by one of our many manufacturers in Italy, Germany, Japan or Switzerland. We appreciate your patience in such cases and we will inform you of the tracking details as soon as your order is shipped from the manufacturer or supplier.

At any time, if you have questions or concerns about the delivery time of your order (maybe because it's for a birthday, wedding or Christmas present) then let us know and we will do our best to fast-track the order with our manufacturers. Contact us here.
